TÜBİTAK MAM Produces a 3.5 Times Stronger Thin Glass

-A +A

The Materials Institute of TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center achieved to increase the strength of thin glass of 1.1 mm thickness by 3.5 times by processing the glass surface with a special technique.

The studies in the laboratories of the Materials Institute have made it possible to increase the strength of thin glass, as well as adding wavelength-selective properties to glass owing to nano-scale particles in the composition; which allowed the production of a durable and antibacterial glass with solar control.

The antibacterial activity tests in accordance with the “JIS Z 2801” standard revealed that the glass reduces the bacterium cells by over 99.998%. Since the structure of the glass surface is antibacterial, the new product is quite more durable than coating applications, and is more suitable for outdoor uses.

The technology for the chemical strengthening of thin glass is used in applications requiring advanced mechanical and optical properties like solar panels and cockpits of planes and high-speed trains. Chemically strengthened antibacterial thin glass with solar-control properties has a wide range of uses like in touch screens (of cellular phones, tablets, computers, automated teller machines, etc.), public places like undergound trains and public restrooms, non-bacterium laboratory equipment and outer surfaces of white goods.
