The space-qualified solar panel developed by TÜBİTAK MAM Materials Institute Photovoltaic Technologies Center has successfully passed ground-level verification, qualification and functionality tests in compliance with international standards.
The space-qualified solar panel will take place as the base load in our national satellite to be launched in 2022 and will be the first space-qualified solar panel developed in Turkey in the history. In this context, the manufactured space-qualified solar panel will have a power generation capacity of 100 watts under harsh space conditions. The know-how and manufacturing infrastructure attained with the Space-Qualified Solar Panel Development Project will allow the design and manufacture of solar panels suitable for meeting the power needs of satellites with high power requirements.
So far, all space-qualified solar panels meeting the energy needs of national satellites developed in Turkey used to be imported from foreign countries. By this means, TÜBİTAK MAM Materials Institute has managed to manufacture space-qualified solar panels with high added value and strategic and competitive aspects owing to its sustainably developing infrastructure and qualified human resources, with a view to eliminate foreign-dependency of Turkey, to overcome trade restrictions on imported products especially in military and intelligence fields and to increase Turkey’s share in the manufacture and export of these products.
